Single Phase Converter

Reference: Pragna

Study of a single phase half and full wave converter circuit.

This kit consists of a power circuit and a firing circuit. Firing circuit can be chosen between an analog based one or a microcontroller based one.

POWER CIRCUIT:

The unit consists of 4 SCRs and 2 power diodes all mounted on heat sink and provided with snubber protection. The devices can be connected in either a half bridge or a full bridge configuration. An additional free wheeling diode is also provided. A circuit breaker is provided to enable or disable power flow safely. Ammeter and voltmeter and provided for reading current and voltage. Provision is provided to supply for the field of a DC motor via bridge rectifier. R, RL and motor loads can be used with this converter.

The connections are brought out to front panel via terminals and the entire setup is enclosed in a powder coated MS box.

FIRING CIRCUIT:

The firing circuit can either be analog based or microcontroller based or both.

Analog firing circuit:

This unit generates four synchronized and isolated gate pulses for thyristors connected in different configurations like half bridge converter, full bridge converter, AC phase control circuit etc. The firing circuit is based on ZCD, ramp generator, op amp comparator and pulse transformer isolation method. Firing angle can be varied from 180 to 0 degree by potentiometer. Test points are provided to study logic circuit.

Microcontroller firing circuit:

This unit generates four synchronized and isolated gate pulses for thyristors. This is a programmable microcontroller based firing circuit. A display is provided to indicate firing angle. The firing angle can be varied between 180 to 0 degree by using switches provided.

Both firing circuits work on 230V AC main and are enclosed in powder coated MS box.
